Success of Llanelly House Tours

Llanelly House has really captured the imagination and support of the local community.  With the success of the Open Doors tours in September, Llanelly House team have opened the doors once again to the public for Thursday Tours.

The weekly tours between November2010 and January 2011, have been such a success that they are fully booked – however a Reserve list has been established just in case there are any cancellations.   Lisa Bancroft, Development Manager of Llanelly House project said, ‘I’m absolutely delighted at the response of the public for this magnificent project.  It is a joy to take people around the house, we are learning new information from the public all the time – it’s a fascinating tour’.  She continued, ‘to date we have escorted approx 130 members of the public around the House between September & December and will take approx a further 40 around the House in the New Year’.

School links

An increasing number of schools within the Llanelli area have become inspired by the Llanelly House project and are currently undertaking a joint partnership approach to research.

Along with Bryngwyn Secondary school, Halfway Community Primary School & Bryn Community Primary School have expressed interest in undertaking some research with the pupils.  The pupils of Halfway Community Primary School are looking into the census of Llanelli, especially the streets around Llanelly House.  The teachers of the school were so keen and excited about the project they attended a Llanelly House tour on their day off! Halfway School will be celebrating their centenary in 2012 which will correspond with the opening of Llanelly House.

With more schools interested in developing a relationship with Llanelly House team, the greater amount of information that the community team can analyse and increase the wealth of knowledge for future generations.

Memory Boxes

The community team will be delivering their first Memory Box workshop to the clients of Tŷ Bryngwyn Hospice, Llanelli.  The clients recently asked the Community team to deliver presentation of Llanelly House but expressed an interest in becoming more involved in the project.

The community team, along with the Occupational Therapy team of Tŷ Bryngwyn Hospice, are developing a suitably themed Memory box session in the New Year. Estelle Evans, Community Engagement Officer, undertook a trial of the Memory Box with a group of Further Education Tutors recently and found that concentrating the Memory box to a theme received great positive feedback. 'The session was strictly timed to just 30 minutes, but the information that was generated in this small amount of time was incredible,' said Estelle.  'The topic was 'Cleaning & Washing', but I was totally taken by surprise by the emotion that this topic generated with some of the Tutors – this was unexpected and has made me more aware of how daily activities can affect the emotions of people.'
